How to practise spelling without the tears

• Little and often — ten minutes on three nights beats thirty panicked minutes the night before
• Say it, spell it, say it — out loud, letter by letter, then the whole word again
• Write it big — a whiteboard or bathtub crayons turn drill into a game
• Missed words go back in the pile — words they nail come out, so practice time shrinks to where it's needed

How many words can one list have?

Most school lists run 10 to 20 words, and the practice set handles that fine. For a very long list, split it in half across two nights instead of one long session.

One word keeps coming back wrong — what then?

Make it silly. A funny sentence, a little song, or a memory trick (“big elephants can always understand small elephants” for “because”) sticks where repetition doesn't. Add that word to next week's pile too.

Does typing count as practice?

It helps — but writing by hand and spelling out loud build stronger memory for most kids. Do the screen set together, then close the laptop and spell three favourites out loud at dinner.
